Meetings in 2010-11
15/4 Red Cross, Kalamata
Ida Hysi, Director of Red Cross in Gjirokaster, Margareta Wolf, Fadderfriends and Red Cross personnel and chairman in Kalamata.
The purpose of the meeting was first of all to get to know each other and inform of the Red Cross activities in respective city. The work in Kalamata concentrates mainly upon elderly people whereas that of Gjirokaster aims first of all to help children, young adults and elderly.
2/8 Härnösand
Margareta and Lars Wolf, Rune Wikström.
The purpose of the meeting was to sum up the activities during the first half of the year.
– saldo 49 800:- the main part from monthly contributions from the supporters.
– the account "second-hands, bazaars, Christmas markets" amounts to 38 000:-.
-in total the number of sponsors amounts to 70 and 90% of them pay regularly. Lars contacts the ones who have not made payment for this year.
– everybody who receives contributions must make a report at least twice a year. No report – no further payments.
– The peace organization AGNI in Uppsala, Sweden has together with Fadderfriends decided to make a contribution of 15 000:- to the Gjirokaster Red Cross Elderly
project and 20 000:- for 2010 (depending upon the economic situation).
– Amanda M. has during the summer collected almost 6 000:- for the Gjirokaster sewing project, the money is now deposited on the Fadderfriends' account, but should be dealt with separately.
– our contacts with the South African projects work very well, except one, the Little Angles in Johannesburg. MW will contact their leader Rejoice Mini.
30/10 Red Cross in Gjirokaster
Director Ida Hysi and Margareta and Lars Wolf.
The children's project developes very well. Some thirty children belong to the project and most of them come to the social center regularly.Various activities are offered at the center, among those are lessons in computer and sewing skills. The modern sewing machine is donated by Amanda M. The children receive drinks and snacks every day and they watch tv, play games and do homework. The Elderly project was delayed due to the swine flu but finally got started in early October, after inspections by the social welfare and health departments of the city of Gjirokaster. Light meals can be served as soon as the economy permits. Some thirty elderly men and women attend the social center every morning (when the children are in school). They receive hot drinks, snacks and can read newspapers and play chess and other games.
– The sewing project has not yet started. The main reason is that there is a possibility that the Gjirokaster Red Cross can get some support also from an organization in Switzerland. The two organizations are waiting for the outcome of a common application. The aim of the sewing project is not only to provide work for a small number of women, but also in cooperation with the local textile industry and the community to train women to use modern sewing machines and other equipment. After a period of training at the social center the women will hopefully be employed by the firms and can also start their own business, and new women can be offered training. The Red Cross/Fadderfriends social center can be used at the beginning but as soon as the economy allows a more practical locality must be found.
– The sewing project is an economically independent one but carried out in close cooperation with Fadderfriends. Amanda M. has so far collected 6 000:- and also donated a sewing machine. Several boxes with fabrics have been given to the project by families in Greece.
19/11 UNICEF-meeting in Stoupa
Marina Corina Vlassis, Margareta and Lars Wolf. – Bazaars arranged in cooperation between Fadderfriends and UNICEF run very well. Our common arrangements give a good contribution to the activities of the Fadderfriends. The bazaars are reported separately and checked and audited by Ann Sheppard, in Riglia, Messene. Bazaars are arranged on the first Saturday of every month (except January and February, 2010). – At the meeting was suggested that a collection of money should be made in late summer for the international activity The Children of the World.

South Africa Rejoice Mini has finished her training to become a social worker and has got a certificate from the training institution. Ff has given her support, economically as well as morally. We have congratulated her to her achievements and wish her good luck in her important work for the children. Like before, Ff will continue to support Little Angels Orphanage near Johannesburg with 1000:- per month. Our former receiver of support Ntombi will continue her studies of Political Science in February 2012 at the University of Western Cape. Her sister Nosisi is a bright high school student in Capetown, whom Ff supports with 400:- every month.

A meeting will take place with the Red Cross and Ff early this coming fall. Handicraft products have been bought from the handicraft coop in Gjirokaster and in Stoupa to an amount of app. 1500:-.
